  4. About QuickFigure Lite
  5.  
  6. QuickFigure Lite is a fast, small, fully functional spreadsheet for the 
  7. Newton. It supports all standard Newton math and financial functions, 
  8. allows the user to store multiple worksheets, has printing, faxing and 
  9. mailing capability, and many other features.
  10.  
  11. QuickFigure Lite is shareware-- you may give it to others provided that 
  12. you do not charge for it and you include a copy of this file (in either 
  13. electronic or printed form), but I retain all rights to the software. 
  14. If you use QuickFigure for more than 30 days, or you would like the 
  15. other benefits of registration, you must send in the registration fee 
  16. of $20 (see below). If you are interested in a site license, please 
  17. inquire via E-Mail.

  19. Benefits of Registration / Upgrade

  21. If you register your copy of QuickFigure Lite, you will receive a 
  22. manual, an enhanced version of the software (no start-up screen, more 
  23. formatting options, more math and financial functions, and some other 
  24. things), notification of new and improved versions, and technical 
  25. support (via E-Mail).

  27. The registered version of QuickFigure is scheduled for release on 
  28. February 8, 1994.
  29.  
  30. If there seems to be demand, I will expand QuickFigure Lite into a more 
  31. complete version. The complete version would most likely include 
  32. import/export capability from your Mac/DOS machine, graphing, 
  33. scrolling, and online help. If you are interested in the full version 
  34. (the price will be around $35), please let me know by E-Mail. Comments 
  35. and suggestions are welcome.

  69. Helpful Hints
  70.  
  71. To make the start-up screen go away, simply tap anywhere on it.
  72.  
  73. To get an input window, tap on a cell. You may then enter a number, a 
  74. label, or a formula. Numbers and labels require no special syntax 
  75. (decimal numbers require a leading "0"-- "0.75" rather than ".75". 
  76. Formulas begin with "=", and have a straightforward syntax.  With the 
  77. input window open, tapping on a cell or selecting a range enters it 
  78. into the input area, where it can be used in a formula.

  87. Cells may be selected by drawing from left to right, beginning in the 
  88. first cell of the selection and ending in the last cell. A single cell 
  89. may be selected (for purposes of formatting or cut/copy/paste/clear) by 
  90. drawing a line within the boundaries of that cell (if you tap on it, 
  91. the input window will appear, and it is selected, but if you draw a 
  92. line inside of  it, it selects without the input window appearing).

  94. The Edit button allows you to Cut/Copy/Paste/Clear/Fill. If a cell has 
  95. a formula, that is always copied. Otherwise, the value or label is 
  96. copied. When formulas are copied, they are moved relative to the new 
  97. location. If a cell in a formula is preceded by a "$", then it is an 
  98. absolute reference.  For example:
  99.  
  100.         copied from B1:             =A1 + $A2
  101.         pasted into C2:                 =B2 + $A2
  102.  
  103. There are two ways to delete the contents of a cell or range of cells: 
  104. scrubbing over the cell(s) (be careful-- scrubbing often deletes more 
  105. than you expect), or selecting the cell(s) and choosing "Clear" from 
  106. the Edit button.
  107.  
  108. Fill takes the value or formula in the upper left most cell of a range, 
  109. and fills in the rest of the range with that value or formula.
  110.  
  111. The Format button brings up a window with formatting choices. Cells are 
  112. not individually resizable in this version of QF Lite.
  113.  
  114. To open a previously stored worksheet, tap the overview button on the 
  115. Newt. This will display your stored worksheets by the contents of cell 
  116. A1. If you don't have anything in A1, QuickFigure shows ". . .". 
  117. Worksheets are stored automatically (similar to the Notepad).
  118.  
  119. QF Lite supports over 40 math functions. If you are not sure if a 
  120. function is supported, give it a try. In addition, QF Lite supports the 
  121. following range functions:
  122.  
  123.     SUM(firstCell:lastCell)
  124.     AVG(firstCell:lastCell)
  125.     NUM(firstCell:lastCell)
  126.  
  127. Finally, QF adds a new word to the Intelligent Assistant: "Calculate". 
  128. Simply write "calculate" followed by any math expression (or 
  129. NewtonScript expression), highlight it, tap "Assist", and QF will show 
  130. you the answer. For example, write "calculate 9/3" and a view will 
  131. appear with "3". The Assistant will also respond to "Figure" instead of 
  132. "calculate".

  134. Known Bugs
  135.  
  136. 1. Once a value or a formula is entered from the Input Window, it 
  137. cannot be undone (Undo does work for Cut/Paste/Clear/Fill, and Delete).
  138.  
  139. 2. Selecting "Wide" on cell width only allows you to see columns A, B, 
  140. and C. Values and formulas in the other columns are still there and 
  141. available for use. I am working on this, so that if you have a cell or 
  142. range selected in D or E, it will show C, D and E instead.
  143.  
  144. 3. QF Lite does not equate empty cells with "0" for purposes of 
  145. calculating formulas. I can change this, but it will result in slowing 
  146. the recalculation down-- I would like to hear your opinions on this. 
  147. For now, just put in zeroes where you want them.
  148.  
  149. 4. The display temporarily weirds out when going to a found entry from the
  150. global Find overview.
  151.  
  152. 5. Occasionally, strange things will happen (such as the grid 
  153. disappearing). This is caused by the Newton running out of frames heap 
  154. memory. If this happens, see "A Note about Memory Use" below.
  155.  
  156. SPEED
  157.  
  158. Although QuickFigure is generally pretty fast, some operations are very 
  159. slow. Recalculating is not too bad (it all depends on how many cells 
  160. are referenced by each formula), but Paste and Fill can be very slow, 
  161. especially if you are doing a large area. If you think it has crashed, 
  162. it probably hasn't-- it's just busy. Let it work for a while, and see 
  163. what happens.

  166. A NOTE ABOUT MEMORY USE:
  167.  
  168. If you are using 1.04 (and sometimes 1.11), you will probably see the 
  169. "Newton does not have enough memory. . ." message on occasion. Large 
  170. spreadsheets do use up a great deal of the Newton's frames heap memory 
  171. (this has nothing to do with how much memory "prefs" or the card says 
  172. you have available). If you get this message, there are several things 
  173. you can do:
  174.  
  175.     1. Close any other applications you have open at the same time.
  176.  
  177.     2. If you don't have anything else open, go ahead and reset. At worst, you 
  178. should only lose the last thing (or two) that you entered. The Newt 
  179. should work find then.
  180.  
  181.  If you get this message just after printing or faxing (while the 
  182. OutBox is still visible), go ahead and press "Cancel", and go on about 
  183. your business (if you have everything saved and aren't in a hurry, a 
  184. reset is not a bad idea).
  185.  
  186. Changes between Versions 1.02 and 1.00:
  187.  
  188. 1. Fixed copy bug so that absolute cell references now work OK.
  189. 2. Fixed Find bug so that if the QuickFigure soup has not been created, Global finds will still work OK.
  190. 3. Removed Enter button from format window.
  191. 4. QF now automatically closes the extras drawer.
  192. 5. Made a modification which should reduce memory usage on newly created worksheets (doesn't affect worksheets created with Version 1.00 or older).
